FIRST  know the difference      TERMITE  vs  ANT

SECOND know that an untrained eye can easily mistake the two.

Text Box: ANTS are often  mistaken for termites, but
the difference is easy to tell once you know
that  ANTS have a “hourglass” shape to their body  with two narrow “ waists” TERMITES are straight & have thick  waists This is the easiest way to tell

Both insects may or may not have wings and both may suddenly produce large numbers of winged individuals ... this is known as a “swarm”and is how they reproduce., also being a positive sign of a mature colony.
It is common to mis-diagnose ants to be termites so find out first if they are termites or ants.

                             TERMITE      CONTROL

Text Box: DID YOU KNOW.....

Subterranean Termites damage more homes than fire, floods, hurricanes, tornadoes and earthquakes combined every year

What is more disturbing is that your typical homeowners’ insurance policy does not cover this type of damage.

Unfortunately, there are thousands of homes under attack at this very moment, but homeowners are completely unaware.

You see, subterranean termites do not live in the wood they are destroying. These insects live underground attacking the wood infrastructure of your home behind finished walls and floors. You typically can’t see them or hear them. By the time you realize your home has a problem with termites, they may have already done thousands of dollars in structural damage.

The problem is  significant in our area ,so that almost every home is treated for termites during construction.… but every home is at risk, as the  “attack rate” is 50-50 in this region and the rate escalates as you go south , decreases to the north.
Many factors are considered to determine your risk, and should be discussed with a licensed professional.

Your home is your biggest investment. You protect it from catastrophic events such as fires, storms and other damaging things…doesn’t it make sense to protect it from something as damaging as termites? Finding out your home has termites instills a sense of fear among most homeowners. Does your home have termites? Is it worth the gamble of not knowing?
Our Inspectors are trained and certified in termite identification and control. “Experienced” eyes can locate the specific areas of your home where termites are likely to occur. You may request a free home analysis at anytime to solve an existing problem or just for peace of mind.

Subteranean Termites
In this area we see Eastern Subterranean Termites (Reticulitermes Flavipes). This species is the most common, most widely distributed and most damaging in the U.S. As their name suggests, they live underground in a complex social society made up of several “castes”, each with distinct functions and behaviors. These include reproductives (the queen, king, and winged swarmers), soldiers, and workers. The reproductives produce thousands of eggs each year, the workers feed and maintain the colony and the soldiers protect the colony from invading insects.

Subterranean termites search for wood farther from their nest as their colony grows. Workers make underground tunnels and above ground tunnels called shelter tubes. These tubes are constructed to enable termites to attack wood that is above the soil. Shelter tubes act as a highway from the nest to the food source. Termites can find their way into any home through an opening as small as 1/32 of an inch (cracks in the foundation, pipes chases, expansion joints, etc.). Every home is a target!
A typical termite colony may contain 2-3 million termites. Property owners seldom see the worker or soldier termites (creamy-white insects), but may see the swarming reproductives (black insects with large wings). This event occurs in the spring when the swarmers attempt to mate and start new colonies.

Swarming Termites
Termite colonies produce winged reproductives each spring. This event is called a “swarm” and can be traumatic to homeowners. A swarmer is about 3/8” in length including wings. Their body is dark brown to almost black. Swarmers arrive in large numbers and are often attracted to light. The main swarm may last for a couple of hours and can be followed by one or more smaller swarms. This usually occurs during the daytime (either morning or late afternoon) and is more prominent after a spring rain.

WHAT TO DO SHOULD YOU EXPERIENCE A SWARM IN YOUR HOME:
Isolate the room where the swarm is taking place.
Make sure to collect samples for our Inspector; it may just be swarming ants.
You may vacuum up the remaining insects, but do not use pesticides.
Make notes to describe the area the swarmers are emerging from. If they are collecting at a window or near a light source, try to trace their exit point.

NOTE: the swarmers will usually die quickly on their own,
if you spray it  may hinder control
Call our office immediately for an inspection. There is no charge for an inspection or estimate
